Hermann Hesse Museum & Marktplatz

Calw's cobbled Marktplatz is where the story of one of literature's great wanderers begins — Nobel Prize-winning novelist Hermann Hesse was born here in 1877, and the town still wears that legacy with quiet pride. Two sparkling fountains anchor a square ringed by 18th-century half-timbered houses whose sharp gables pierce the Black Forest sky, making it one of Germany's most photogenic market squa

The Man Behind the Town

Hermann Hesse spent his formative years in Calw and drew on its streets, bridges and wooded hillsides throughout his literary career. The Hermann Hesse Museum at Marktplatz 30 traces his life from small-town Swabian boy to author of Siddhartha and Steppenwolf, with manuscripts, photographs and personal artefacts that feel surprisingly intimate for a Nobel laureate.

A bronze statue of Hesse sits near the market square, a favourite spot for a quiet photo before you lose yourself in the lanes radiating outward from the Marktplatz. Pick up a self-guided literary walk map from the tourist office and follow in his footsteps through the old town.

The Marktplatz Itself

The square is the social heartbeat of Calw — locals sip coffee at pavement tables, children chase pigeons between the fountains, and the half-timbered facades glow amber in the afternoon light. Surrounded by 18th-century architecture, it is the picture of a quintessential Black Forest town.

Come on a weekday morning when market stalls set up and the square hums with everyday life rather than tourist bustle. The pedestrianised old town radiates outward from here, making it the ideal launch pad for any exploration of Calw.
