Pukará de Lasana
Perched on a clifftop above the jade-green ribbon of the Loa River, the Pukará de Lasana is one of northern Chile's most atmospheric archaeological sites — and one of its least crowded. Just 40 km northeast of Calama, this pre-Columbian fortress rewards those who make the short detour.
A Fortress Built for the Desert
Declared a Chilean National Monument in 1982, the Pukará de Lasana was built around the 12th century by the indigenous Atacameño (Lican Antay) people as a combined defensive and residential complex. Its stone architecture — narrow streets, rectangular and circular rooms, storage silos — is remarkably well preserved given its age and the harshness of its environment.
The site spans roughly 250 metres along the cliffside and once housed hundreds of people. Silos within the ruins still show traces of the corn, dried meat, and herbs that sustained the community — a vivid reminder that this was a living town, not just a military outpost.
The Valley Around It
Beyond the walls, the Lasana Valley is laced with petroglyphs, rock art, and ancient stone houses that extend the archaeological experience well beyond the fortress itself. On the far side of the pukará, an evergreen valley of terraced crops and herb gardens shows that this oasis has been farmed continuously for centuries.
The vertical cliffs rising from the riverbed create a dramatically enclosed landscape that feels utterly removed from the modern world. Visit in the morning for golden light on the stone walls and cooler temperatures before the desert sun peaks.
Getting There & Practicalities
Lasana sits about 40 km northeast of Calama via the international route toward Bolivia (Ruta B-151). You can drive independently or join a guided day trip that typically pairs Lasana with the nearby colonial church of San Francisco de Chiu Chiu, just 10 km to the south.
An English-language map booklet is provided at the entrance, guiding you point-by-point through the ruins. The site has bathrooms and a small stall selling local produce including carrot and beetroot jams — an unexpected and delicious souvenir.
