Chuquicamata Open-Pit Copper Mine

Standing at the rim of Chuquicamata is one of those genuinely jaw-dropping moments that no photograph can fully prepare you for. This colossal open-pit mine — the largest of its kind on Earth — has shaped Calama's identity, economy, and skyline for over a century.

The Scale of It All

Chuquicamata is so vast that the terraced walls descending into the earth look like the rings of an alien planet. Operated by state copper giant Codelco, the pit stretches roughly 4.3 km long, 3 km wide, and nearly 1 km deep — numbers that only make sense once you're peering over the edge.

The surrounding area also contains the ghost town of Chuquicamata itself, a company settlement that was evacuated in 2007 to make way for mine expansion. Walking its abandoned streets — a school, a cinema, a hospital all frozen in time — adds an eerie, poignant layer to the visit.

What the Tour Covers

Guided tours depart from the Codelco Visitor Center in Calama and take visitors through the mine facilities, the historic ghost town, and exhibits on copper extraction technology and the social history of the mining boom. The center functions as a gallery of industrial heritage in its own right.

Guides explain the environmental challenges of large-scale mining alongside Chile's deep economic dependence on copper — making this as thought-provoking as it is spectacular. Bring a windproof layer; the altitude and open terrain make it noticeably cooler than the city below.

Planning Your Visit

Tours are organised through Codelco and must be booked in advance — walk-ins are not accepted. The mine is located just a few kilometres north of central Calama, making it an easy half-day excursion before heading onward to San Pedro de Atacama.

Photography rules are strictly enforced on site, so check the current guidelines when booking. The Visitor Center also has a small shop where you can pick up copper-crafted souvenirs — fittingly, the only appropriate memento from the copper capital of the world.
