Rusty's Markets, Grafton Street
If you want to understand what Cairns actually eats, Rusty's is your classroom. Open every Friday through Sunday since 1975, this covered market on Grafton Street is where local chefs, farmers, and food lovers converge over mountains of exotic fruit and steaming street food.
A sensory feast unlike any supermarket
More than 180 stalls pack the covered arcade, selling everything from mangosteen, rambutans, and black sapote to warm sourdough, handmade dumplings, and locally pressed honey. Indigenous Australian ingredients sit alongside produce from the Torres Strait Islands, Papua New Guinea, China, and India — a living map of Far North Queensland's multicultural identity.
Chefs from across the region shop here on Friday mornings, picking the best of what local farms delivered overnight. Arriving early means first pick of the rarest tropical varieties; arriving late on Sunday means bargain prices as vendors clear their stalls.
What to eat before you leave
Grab a Vietnamese iced coffee from one of the drink stalls, then circle back for a coconut bowl at The Grateful Coconut stall — a dairy-free, photogenic treat that has become a market signature. Fresh-baked croissants, Thai papaya salad, and Korean bites round out a breakfast that costs next to nothing.
The market is covered but not air-conditioned, so the tropical heat builds by mid-morning. Wear light clothing, bring a reusable bag, and carry cash — it is preferred at most stalls, though an ATM sits at the market entrance.
Going deeper with a guided tour
Rusty's Market Foodlovers Tours run guided walks through the aisles with at least seven tasting stops, introducing you to the makers and the stories behind Cairns' food scene. It is the fastest way to learn which stalls the chefs rate and to try fruits you would never pick up on your own.
The market is located at 57–89 Grafton Street, three blocks in from the Esplanade, with free parking on Sheridan Street above. Bus route 1A from Cairns Central drops you two blocks away.
