Red Arrow Circuit, Mount Whitfield Conservation Park
Locals lace up their runners here after work; savvy visitors do it at dawn. The Red Arrow Circuit in Mount Whitfield Conservation Park climbs through bamboo groves and tropical rainforest to a lookout with sweeping views over Cairns, Trinity Inlet, the Coral Sea, and Green Island — all within 10 minutes of the CBD.
The trail itself
The 1.5-kilometre loop gains around 100 metres of elevation via more than 250 well-maintained concrete steps and packed-earth paths that wind through bamboo forest, open eucalypt woodland, and shady rainforest gullies. The ascent is steep enough to feel like an achievement but short enough for most fitness levels to complete in 40–60 minutes.
At the top, two lookouts offer different angles: one faces the Cairns Airport runway and city grid, the other peers out to the shimmering Coral Sea and the silhouette of Green Island. The fresh ridge breeze is a genuine relief after the humid climb.
Wildlife you might meet on the way
Scrub turkeys strut the lower trail with zero regard for personal space, while agile wallabies appear in the grassy clearings in the early morning and late afternoon. Patient walkers have also spotted the rare Lumholtz's tree-kangaroo in the denser sections of rainforest — one of the most unexpected wildlife encounters possible this close to a city centre.
Informative signs along the path identify the birds, plants, and reptiles of the conservation park, making the walk as educational as it is physical. Bring water and wear closed-toe shoes — the steps can be slippery after rain.
Combining it with the Botanic Gardens
The trailhead sits just past the Tanks Art Centre on Collins Avenue, Edge Hill, immediately adjacent to the Cairns Botanic Gardens. A logical plan is to walk the Red Arrow Circuit first thing in the morning, then cool down with a stroll through the Botanic Gardens' tropical plant collections before the heat peaks around midday.
For those wanting more, the Blue Arrow Track branches off midway up the Red Arrow and extends the adventure to a 6-kilometre return route reaching the Lumley Hill summit at 365 metres above sea level — proper hiking territory requiring good fitness and a full water bottle.
