Praia das Conchas & Morro do Vigia Trail
Only 600 metres of sand, but Praia das Conchas is arguably the most beautiful cove in Cabo Frio — crystal-clear natural rock pools, calm turquoise water, and a curved shoreline shaped exactly like a seashell from above. Climb the adjacent Morro do Vigia trail and you'll see why travellers call this stretch of coast a hidden heart.
The cove itself
Praia das Conchas sits tucked between Morro do Vigia and Ponta do Arpoador, sheltered from the open swell that hits Praia do Forte and Peró. The result is calmer, clearer water — perfect for snorkelling among the natural rock pools that form along the shoreline. The beach is small, so it fills up fast on summer weekends; arrive before 09:00 or visit mid-week for the best experience.
From the rocky headland on the right side of the beach, you can see where Praia das Conchas and the much longer Praia do Peró merge — the combined silhouette of the two beaches, viewed from above, traces the outline of a heart. It's one of those views you have to see to believe.
The Morro do Vigia trail
A moderate 860-metre hiking trail climbs from the beach up to the summit of Morro do Vigia, rewarding walkers with a sweeping 360-degree panorama of both Praia das Conchas and Praia do Peró. The path passes two separate mirantes (lookout terraces) and a tiny fishermen's cove called Pesqueirinho — a genuinely off-the-beaten-track spot.
The trail is accessible from either beach — about a 10-minute walk from Praia do Peró heading right, or from Praia das Conchas heading left. The terrain includes some uneven rock sections and steep drops, so wear proper footwear and don't attempt it in flip-flops. Total ascent time is around 30–40 minutes at an easy pace.
