Morro da Guia
A short but steep climb up this hill in the Itajuru district rewards you with the finest panoramic viewpoint in all of Cabo Frio — the canal, the beaches, the dunes, and the open ocean all visible at once. At the summit, an 18th-century chapel adds a quiet, unexpected grace note to the scenery.
The climb and the payoff
From the base in the Itajuru neighbourhood, a mix of stone steps and inclined paths winds up through sparse Atlantic vegetation to the summit. The ascent takes about 15–20 minutes at a leisurely pace — bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and go on a clear-sky day to make the most of the view.
At the top, the Canal do Itajuru glitters below you, connecting Lagoa de Araruama to the Atlantic. To the east you can pick out the white sands of Praia do Forte, to the west the snow-white dunes of Peró, and on exceptionally clear days the lighthouse on Ilha do Farol at Arraial do Cabo.
The chapel and the legend
The whitewashed Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia crowns the summit and is one of Cabo Frio's most photographed landmarks. Local tradition holds that an image of Our Lady of Guia appeared repeatedly on the hilltop, prompting the faithful to build the chapel here in the 1700s.
Even if you're not religiously inclined, the chapel's simple colonial architecture against the wide blue sky makes for an irresistible photograph. The site is free, open to all, and tends to be peaceful even when the beaches below are packed.
