Poole's Cavern & Buxton Country Park

Poole's Cavern is the Peak District's most spectacular show cave — a two-million-year-old labyrinth of vast limestone chambers, glittering stalactites, and formations so unusual that it was recorded as a 'Wonder of the Peak' as far back as 1683. Set within 100 acres of ancient woodland that spills straight up to Solomon's Temple, this is a half-day adventure that moves effortlessly from undergroun

Inside the Cave

Guided tours (the only way in) lead you through a sequence of chambers decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, and distinctively coloured 'poached egg' formations caused by iron-rich mineral seepage. The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 7°C year-round, so bring a warm layer even in July.

The cavern's colourful human history adds to the atmosphere: the outlaw John Poole allegedly used it as a hideout in the 15th century, Roman artefacts have been discovered inside, and archaeological evidence suggests Bronze Age occupation. The Cavern was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its geology.

Buxton Country Park Above Ground

Above the cave entrance, 100 acres of mature deciduous woodland criss-crossed by well-marked trails make up Buxton Country Park — one of the few areas of ancient woodland this close to a town centre in the Peak District. The trails link naturally to Grin Low Hill and Solomon's Temple, turning a cave visit into a full morning out.

Wildlife is abundant: look for roe deer, great spotted woodpeckers, and a rich understory of wildflowers in spring. The park is managed by the Buxton Civic Association, the same charity that rescued and reopened the cavern in 1977.

Practicalities & the Café

The site has a well-regarded on-site café serving homemade soup, toasties, jacket potatoes, cakes, and a strong vegan and gluten-free menu — ideal for refuelling before or after the woodland walk. There is also a picnic area if you prefer to bring your own lunch.

Parking is free at the Poole's Cavern car park on Green Lane, and the Go Ape high-ropes adventure course operates from the same woodland site, making it easy to turn a cave visit into a full family day.
