Buxton Market Place

Buxton Market Place holds a genuine claim to fame: at over 1,000 feet above sea level, it is the highest market in England — and the wind-whipped, character-filled stalls that fill it every Tuesday and Saturday are as authentic as markets get. Come on the third Saturday of the month and you'll find it transformed into a dedicated Food & Drink Special Market, the best single opportunity to load up

The Regular Market

Every Tuesday and Saturday from 9am to 4pm, the Market Place fills with stalls selling fresh produce, local meats, baked goods, clothing, gifts, and household essentials. The atmosphere is resolutely local — this is where Buxton residents actually shop, not a tourist confection — which gives it an honest energy that polished food halls simply cannot replicate.

The market is now run by Buxton Markets CIC, a Community Interest Company, which has reinvigorated the trader mix with new stalls and a broader range of goods. On the first Saturday of each month, extra Craft, Quirky & Vintage stalls join the regular traders, making it a happy hunting ground for antique browsers and independent makers.

The Food & Drink Special Market

On the third Saturday of each month (March through December), the market pivots to a dedicated food and drink focus. Expect locally raised meats, home-baked cakes and loaves, handmade chocolates, smoked fish and pâtés, locally grown vegetables, and artisan preserves — a concentrated showcase of what the Peak District larder produces.

For cheese lovers, keep an eye out for Peakland Blue and Peakland White — regional cheeses that are close cousins of Stilton, produced in the surrounding dales and rarely found outside local markets and food fairs.

Around the Market

The Market Place sits in Higher Buxton, the older, hillier part of town, a short walk up from the Georgian Crescent and Pavilion Gardens. Geoff Mycock & Son, a family butcher established in 1958 on nearby Scarsdale Place, is the last independent butcher in Higher Buxton and sources meat from their own farm — worth a detour on any market day.

After browsing the stalls, the Cavendish Arcade — a Victorian shopping arcade with a beautiful domed roof just minutes away on Spring Gardens — is the perfect place to warm up with a coffee and continue the independent-shopping trail through Lower Buxton.
