Mercado Semanal de Burlada
Every Thursday morning a street market unfolds along the Avenida de Zaragoza, and it is the kind of unpolished, genuinely local affair where farmers still argue cheerfully about the price of white asparagus. This is where Burlada's cooks actually shop.
What to Buy
Navarre's famous white asparagus — the fat, ivory spears grown in the Ebro valley — appears in April and May, and the stalls here sell it cheaper and fresher than any supermarket in Pamplona. Vendors will often let you taste before you buy.
In autumn the market shifts to peppers: dried ñoras, fresh pimientos del piquillo and the occasional jar of homemade mermelada de pimiento that locals spread on toast with a slice of Roncal cheese.
Beyond the Food
A row of non-food stalls sells work clothes, household linens and inexpensive ceramics — the practical, unglamorous side of a working-class Navarrese town that gives the market its authentic character.
Arrive by 9 am for the best selection; by 11:30 the vegetable sellers begin packing up. The small bar at the market's northern end does a brisk trade in café con leche and fresh-squeezed orange juice for shoppers taking a break.
