Sierra de Atapuerca & Prehistoric Park

Just 15 kilometres east of Burgos, the low limestone hills of Atapuerca contain the oldest hominin fossils ever found in Europe — bones that pushed back the human story on this continent by hundreds of thousands of years. A visit here is not just a nature walk; it is a journey to the very origins of our species.

The Caves That Rewrote History

The Atapuerca Archaeological Site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where excavations since the 1990s have unearthed fossils of Homo antecessor dating back 1.2 million years. The Gran Dolina and Sima de los Huesos sites are the two most significant — both are accessible only on guided tours, which is the only way to visit the active excavation areas.

The guided tours run from the Museo de la Evolución Humana in Burgos city and include transport to the site, a walk through the excavation trenches and a commentary from trained archaeologist-guides. Booking well in advance is essential in summer.

The Museo de la Evolución Humana

If the site tours are fully booked, the Museo de la Evolución Humana on Paseo Sierra de Atapuerca in Burgos is a destination in its own right. The museum houses original fossils, life-size reconstructions of early hominins and an immersive timeline of human evolution that is genuinely gripping for adults and children alike.

The building itself — a sweeping contemporary design by Juan Navarro Baldeweg — is an architectural statement on the riverfront that has become one of Burgos's most photographed modern landmarks.

Allow two to three hours for the museum and book the Atapuerca site tour separately at atapuerca.org — the two experiences complement each other perfectly and together make one of the most intellectually rewarding day trips in northern Spain.
