Cartuja de Miraflores
Three kilometres east of the city centre, tucked into a pine forest on the banks of the Arlanzón, the Carthusian monastery of Miraflores contains what many art historians consider the finest late-Gothic sculpture in Spain — and almost no one outside Burgos knows it exists. Entry is free, and the silence inside is profound.
Gil de Siloé's Masterwork
The church interior is dominated by the alabaster tomb of King Juan II of Castile and his queen, Isabel of Portugal, completed by sculptor Gil de Siloé between 1489 and 1493. The eight-pointed star-shaped monument is covered in a density of carved figures, heraldic symbols and Gothic tracery that seems impossible for any single pair of hands to have produced.
Beside it stands the tomb of the Infante Alfonso, brother of Queen Isabella the Catholic, carved with equal virtuosity. Isabella herself commissioned both tombs as an act of filial devotion, and the gold used in the gilding is said to be the first gold brought back from the Americas.
Getting There and Making a Morning of It
The monastery is still home to a small community of Carthusian monks who maintain strict rules of silence and enclosure. Visitors are welcome in the church but the cloister and monastic buildings are closed to the public — respect the quiet and switch phones to silent before entering.
The 45-minute walk from the city centre along the Arlanzón river path is one of the most pleasant in Burgos, passing through the Fuentes Blancas park where locals jog, picnic and let children feed the ducks. Combine both into a half-day itinerary.
A small gift shop by the entrance sells honey, herbal liqueurs and hand-calligraphed cards produced by the monks — genuinely useful souvenirs made on-site.
