Sultan Mosque (Masjid Sultan)
Rising above Kampong Glam's shophouse rooftops, Sultan Mosque's twin golden domes are the undisputed visual anchor of Bugis — a national monument that has drawn worshippers and wanderers alike since the 1820s. Step inside and you step into one of Singapore's most moving spaces: vast, calm, and alive with 200 years of multicultural history.
Architecture Worth Every Photograph
Built in 1932 and designed by Irish architect Denis Santry, the mosque showcases a striking fusion of Islamic and Western architectural elements — a deliberate symbol of Singapore's multicultural identity.
The main prayer hall can accommodate over 5,000 worshippers, and the dome's base is famously constructed from hundreds of glass bottles donated by devotees during the building's reconstruction — a detail that rewards a closer look.
The golden onion domes are visible from several streets away and are best photographed from the pedestrian-only Bussorah Street, which frames them perfectly between rows of heritage shophouses.
The Streets That Surround It
Bussorah Street, Kandahar Street, and Baghdad Street radiate outward from the mosque and have preserved their original heritage shophouses, now home to Malay restaurants, craft shops, and small boutique hotels.
The mosque's history traces back to 1824, when Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor requested its construction as part of his agreement with the British East India Company — making a visit here as much a lesson in colonial Singapore as it is a spiritual experience.
Authorities sometimes close the road during peak prayer times to give worshippers room to gather outside, turning the surrounding streets into a spontaneous community spectacle.
How to Visit Respectfully
Visiting hours are 9 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 4 PM daily, with a later afternoon opening on Fridays. Guided tours are available in multiple languages — book ahead for the most context.
Respectful attire is required; robes are available to borrow at the entrance, but bringing a light scarf of your own saves queueing time and doubles as shoulder cover on the walk around the neighbourhood.
