St Nicholas Market (St Nicks)
Tucked inside a Georgian Glass Arcade in the heart of the old city, St Nicholas Market — affectionately known as St Nicks — is where Bristol's independent soul is most loudly on display. Arrive hungry: the street food here is arguably the most diverse and high-quality in the whole of the West of England.
A Market Born in 1743
Established over 280 years ago on Corn Street, St Nicks has evolved from a corn-trading hub into a vibrant labyrinth of stalls selling vinyl records, vintage clothing, Bristol-inspired artwork, and handcrafted gifts. The Georgian architecture — all stone arches and a soaring glass roof — is stunning in its own right.
Almost every stall is independently owned, with chefs cooking traditional family recipes right in front of you. Highlights include the Momo Bar in the Glass Arcade, serving handmade steamed and fried Tibetan dumplings, and Red Tiger, which brings authentic Malaysian laksa and nasi lemak to the heart of Bristol.
Don't miss the Bristol Hot Sauce Emporium for fiery locally made condiments, or Beast Clothing for T-shirts printed with Bristolian slang — 'Cheers Drive' and 'Gert Lush' make perfect souvenirs.
Lunch Like a Local
The sweet spot for visiting is between 11:45 am and 12:15 pm — stalls have just finished prep, the food is freshest, and the office crowds haven't yet blockaded the walkways. Expect sizzling Persian kebabs, aromatic curries, and freshly baked focaccia competing for your attention.
Seating inside is notoriously limited. Most Bristolians take their food five minutes up the road to Castle Park and eat by the water — a habit worth copying on a fine day.
On selected dates, St Nicks opens late for a Night Market: the streets are pedestrianised, DJs play outside, and stalls stay open into the evening. It has a genuine festival atmosphere and is a highlight of the Bristol calendar — check the market website for upcoming dates.
Getting There & Around
The market is based on Corn Street in the old city centre, a five-minute walk from Bristol Temple Meads station. A farmers' market also runs on Corn Street every other Wednesday, and a street food market appears on nearby Wine Street every Friday.
The market is closed on Sundays (except for special events), so plan accordingly — turning up hungry on a Sunday is a mistake locals only make once.
