Inspiration Point Loop at Will Rogers State Historic Park
Just off Sunset Boulevard on the edge of Brentwood, Will Rogers State Historic Park packs polo fields, eucalyptus-scented trails and one of the finest viewpoints in the entire city into a single 186-acre green escape. The Inspiration Point Loop is the unmissable centrepiece — a moderate two-mile hike that rewards you with a sweeping vista stretching from downtown LA to the blue Pacific.
A Hollywood Legend's Ranch Turned Trailhead
The park was Will Rogers's personal ranch from 1924 until his death in 1935 — a rustic hideaway complete with a 31-room ranch house, stables, corrals, a roping arena and the only regulation-size outdoor polo field in Los Angeles County. His widow Betty donated the estate to California State Parks in 1944, and it has been a beloved public green space ever since.
The park also serves as the eastern terminus of the 67-mile Backbone Trail, which traverses the entire length of the Santa Monica Mountains — meaning serious hikers can use Inspiration Point as a launching pad for much bigger adventures into Topanga State Park.
The Inspiration Point Loop: LA's Best Short Hike
The loop is approximately 2.4 miles with around 400 feet of elevation gain — rated moderate and suitable for most fitness levels. The main trail is a wide, soft-earth horse path framed by rows of sweet-smelling eucalyptus trees that climb gradually around a winding hill north of the Rogers house.
At the summit, the view is genuinely breathtaking: a sweeping panorama from the distant office towers of West Los Angeles all the way to the Pacific Ocean, and on a clear day as far as the Palos Verdes Peninsula. It is, by any measure, one of the finest vistas in Los Angeles.
