Wurmberg Summit & Cable Car
At 971 metres, the Wurmberg is the highest peak entirely within Lower Saxony, and the panoramic view from its summit stretches across a rolling sea of dark spruce forest to the Brocken and beyond. A modern gondola — the Wurmbergbahn — whisks you up in under ten minutes, making this the single most rewarding high-altitude experience in the Braunlage area.
Riding the Wurmbergbahn
The cable car departs from the base station on Wurmbergstraße and runs year-round, swapping summer hikers for winter skiers with seamless efficiency. Cabins are large, glass-sided and comfortable, so keep your camera ready for the moment the treeline drops away and the full Harz panorama opens up.
In winter the Wurmberg hosts Braunlage's main ski area, with runs graded for beginners through to confident intermediates and a snowpark for freestyle riders. Ski and snowboard rental is available directly at the base station, so you can arrive empty-handed and be on the slopes within the hour.
Summit Trails & the Brocken View
From the top station a network of marked trails fans out across the plateau, including a gentle 3 km loop that circles the summit ridge and delivers unobstructed views toward the Brocken — the Harz's highest point — on clear days. The wooden summit cross at the highest spot is a classic photo stop and a natural gathering point for hikers.
Late September and October transform the landscape into amber and copper, making the cable-car ride and ridge walk arguably more beautiful in autumn than in any other season. Arrive before 10 am to beat tour groups and catch the low morning light raking across the valleys.
