Restaurant Ratskeller Braunlage

Housed in the historic town hall building on Herzog-Wilhelm-Straße, the Ratskeller Braunlage is the most reliable address in town for authentic regional cooking — think slow-braised Harzer Sauerbraten, venison ragout with Spätzle and the local Clausthaler craft beer on tap in a vaulted dining room that smells pleasantly of woodsmoke. It is the kind of place where locals celebrate birthdays and hik

What to Order

Start with Harzer Käse marinated in caraway oil and served with dark rye bread — the cheese is sharp, almost ammoniac and completely addictive once you adjust to it. Follow with the Wildgulasch (wild game goulash) when it is on the seasonal menu, slow-cooked with juniper berries and root vegetables and served with hand-rolled Thüringer Klöße (potato dumplings) that are dense, pillowy and perfect.

For dessert, the Rote Grütze — a thick compote of red berries served warm with cold vanilla sauce — is a north German classic done well here and the ideal counterpoint to a rich main course. Pair it with a small glass of Harzgeist, the regional herb schnapps distilled in nearby Clausthal-Zellerfeld.

Atmosphere & Booking

The vaulted cellar room seats around 60 and fills quickly on Friday and Saturday evenings and on any day when fresh snow brings skiers down from the Wurmberg. Reservations by phone are strongly recommended for dinner; lunch is generally walk-in friendly.

Service is unhurried in the best German tradition — nobody will rush you out — and the staff are happy to explain regional dishes in English, making this a genuinely welcoming spot for international visitors who want to eat like a local rather than reach for a pizza menu.
