Braunlage Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt)
Every December, Braunlage's compact town centre around the Kurpark and Elbingeröder Straße transforms into one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in the western Harz, with hand-carved wooden stalls, the scent of roasted almonds and mulled Glühwein drifting through crisp mountain air. The surrounding snow-dusted fir forest makes the backdrop almost absurdly picturesque.
What to Buy & Taste
The market leans heavily on genuine Harz craftsmanship: hand-painted nutcrackers, carved smoker figurines (Räuchermänner), beeswax candles and felted wool decorations made by local artisans rather than mass-produced imports. It is one of the better places in the region to pick up an authentic souvenir that will still look good in January.
Food stalls serve Harzer Käse (the region's pungent, low-fat rind cheese) on dark bread, Reibekuchen (potato fritters with apple sauce), and grilled Bratwurst. Wash it all down with a mug of Feuerzangenbowle — flaming rum-soaked sugar dissolved into red wine — for an experience that is pure German winter.
Timing & Atmosphere
The market typically runs on selected weekends in late November and throughout December, with the most magical atmosphere on weekday evenings when the crowds thin out and the fairy lights reflect off any fresh snow. The Kurpark's illuminated trees form a natural cathedral around the stalls.
Braunlage's elevation means a genuine chance of snow during the market period — check the town's webcam on braunlage.de before you travel and time your visit for a forecast snowfall for the full postcard effect.
