Box Hill Gardens
Right in the middle of one of Melbourne's busiest suburban hubs, Box Hill Gardens is a genuinely large and tranquil park that offers an immediate escape from the noise of Whitehorse Road — complete with a lake full of waterbirds and walking paths under shady trees.
A Green Oasis in a Booming Suburb
Box Hill Gardens sits on Station Street, adjacent to Box Hill Hospital and Box Hill Institute, and is beloved by uni students, hospital workers and families alike who need a few quiet minutes away from the suburb's relentless energy. The lake is the star of the show: it hosts a diverse community of water birds including ducks, moorhens and the occasional heron, making it a rewarding spot for casual birdwatchers.
The park is split into distinct zones — shaded lawn areas ideal for picnics, walking paths lined with mature trees and shrubs, a children's playground and open grassy expanses that fill with cricket games on sunny weekends. It is well maintained, clean and genuinely peaceful even on busy days.
In the 1890s, Box Hill was an outer suburb dominated by bushland, and many young Australian artists spent their holidays here painting among the gum trees. That connection to landscape and light still lingers in the gardens' quieter corners — especially on a golden late-afternoon when the light hits the water.
Making the Most of Your Visit
The gardens are free, open all day and perfectly placed for a post-market stroll after the Sunday Box Hill Farmers Market. Grab a coffee from one of the nearby cafes on Station Street, then spend an hour circling the lake path before heading back into the food precinct for lunch.
Birdwatchers should arrive early morning when the lake is calm and the waterbirds are most active. The park is also a lovely spot for a slow jog or a gentle family bike ride along the flat paths.
