Horseshoe Bay
Framed by smooth granite boulders and sheltered by a rocky headland, Horseshoe Bay is Bowen's showstopper — a compact crescent of sand where the Great Barrier Reef's fringing corals begin just metres from the shore. Pull on a snorkel mask and within minutes you're drifting over coral gardens, giant clams and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish.
A beach with built-in reef
Horseshoe Bay is consistently ranked among Australia's best beaches, and the secret is what lies beneath. The fringing reef sits close enough to the shore that no boat, no tour operator and no extra cost stands between you and the coral — just a short wade.
Just offshore you can discover the intertidal sculpture Bwya, vibrant coral gardens, giant clams and a dazzling variety of tropical fish, making it one of the most accessible reef snorkel spots on the entire Queensland coast.
Beyond the water
The Rotary Lookout sits at the top of the headland above the bay, rewarding a short scramble with sweeping panoramic views over the turquoise water and the distant Whitsunday Islands — especially beautiful at sunrise.
The Cape Edgecumbe walking track begins right here at Horseshoe Bay, passing Murray Bay and finishing at Rose Bay in around 2.5 km of coastal trail with striking rock formations and native wildlife along the way.
