Coral Cove & the Bowen Mural Trail
Tucked between rocky headlands south of town, Coral Cove is Bowen's quietest swimming spot — a protected bay where you can snorkel the rocks at low tide and rarely share the water with more than a handful of people. Pair it with a self-guided walk around Bowen's 27 heritage murals and you've got a perfect slow day in one of Queensland's most underrated towns.
Coral Cove: the crowd-free bay
Coral Cove sits between rocky headlands and its sheltered position makes it ideal for a calm swim or an exploratory snorkel along the boulder edges. At low tide the surrounding rocks reveal rockpools teeming with marine life — sea stars, small reef fish and the occasional octopus tucked into a crevice.
Because it sits off the main beach circuit, Coral Cove rarely attracts the numbers that Horseshoe Bay or Queens Beach do, making it the go-to spot for travellers who value solitude over facilities.
The Bowen Mural Trail
Bowen is proudly known as the mural capital of Australia, and the first of its 27 murals was painted on the wall of the Bowen Library back in 1988. The artworks span the full sweep of the town's history — from early colonial settlement and the pearling industry to the rise of Whitsundays tourism — rendered in vivid colour on the walls of shops, pubs and public buildings.
Keep an eye out for the giant painted water tower, a landmark visible from across town, and the colourful scenes on local business walls that celebrate Bowen's tropical lifestyle. A free mural map is available from the Visitor Information Centre next to the Big Mango on the Bruce Highway.
