Marché du Samedi Place de la Nation
Every Saturday morning the Place de la Nation and surrounding streets fill with the best weekly market in the Berry region — a proper, working French market where locals do their real shopping rather than one dressed up for tourists. Cheese, lentilles vertes du Berry, goat's milk crottins and river fish from the Cher all appear alongside cut flowers and hand-thrown pottery.
What to Buy and Eat
The cheesemakers from the Sancerre hills usually set up near the central fountain, selling fresh and aged Crottin de Chavignol at prices far below what you would pay in a Paris fromagerie. Next to them you will typically find a vendor selling local honey from hives kept in the bocage countryside north of the city.
Pick up a paper cone of freshly roasted chestnuts in autumn or a bag of strawberries from the Loire valley in May — the seasonal rhythm here is real and refreshing.
Beyond the Food Stalls
The outer ring of the market is given over to clothing, brocante (second-hand goods) and the occasional antique dealer who has wandered over from the Wednesday brocante market on the same square. It is perfectly possible to find vintage Quimper faience pottery or old postcards of the Berry for a few euros if you arrive before 9 a.m.
A handful of café terraces around the square open early and fill with market-goers — order a café crème and a tartine and watch the whole scene unfold from a pavement chair.
Getting the Most from the Market
The market runs from roughly 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Serious shoppers arrive before 9 a.m.; by 11 a.m. the best produce is gone but the atmosphere is at its most convivial.
Bring a tote bag and cash — many stall holders do not accept cards. The square is a 10-minute walk from the cathedral through the medieval lanes of the Vieille Ville.
