Nagarkot Sunrise Viewpoint

Perched on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, 32 kilometres from the city, Nagarkot delivers the kind of Himalayan panorama that makes grown travellers gasp out loud. On a clear morning the snowcapped arc stretches from Annapurna in the west all the way to distant Everest in the east — a canvas of peaks glowing in gold and pink at first light.

The Sunrise Ritual

Stay the night in one of Nagarkot's hilltop lodges or resorts and set your alarm for 5am. The viewpoints and resort rooftops fill quickly on clear mornings, so position yourself before the sky begins to lighten. Watch as the peaks catch the first rays while the valley below is still pooled in shadow — a slow-motion reveal that no photograph quite does justice.

The panorama on clear days includes Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, Dorje Lakpa, Manaslu, Gauri Shankar and, on the best winter mornings, the unmistakable pyramid of Everest on the far horizon. October to November and December to February are the most reliably clear months.

Beyond the View Tower

Nagarkot is more than a one-trick viewpoint. The surrounding ridgeline has easy walking trails through rhododendron forest and terraced farmland, and a leisurely two-hour hike down toward Changu Narayan temple rewards you with medieval Newari woodcarving and a far quieter crowd than Kathmandu's main heritage sites.

The village itself is small and unhurried, with bakeries, cosy guesthouses and a handful of good restaurants serving dal bhat with valley views. It makes for an ideal overnight escape from Kathmandu's noise and traffic.
