Santuario di San Luca Panoramic Climb
Perched on the Colle della Guardia 300 metres above the city, the Baroque Santuario di San Luca is reached via the world's longest portico — a continuous arcade of 666 arches stretching 3.8 kilometres from Porta Saragozza up into the hills. The view from the church's terrace over Bologna and the Po Valley on a clear day is simply staggering.
The portico walk: an experience in itself
The portico was built between 1674 and 1739 specifically to shelter a procession carrying the revered icon of the Madonna di San Luca down into the city each year. Walking its length is a meditative, shaded journey through arches that rise and fall with the hillside — it takes about 45–60 minutes at a leisurely pace.
Each arch is numbered, and locals treat the walk as a beloved ritual — you'll pass elderly Bolognesi doing their daily constitutional, joggers, families with pushchairs and pilgrims. It is the city's favourite Sunday morning outing, rain or shine.
At the summit
The Basilica itself, designed by Carlo Francesco Dotti, has a striking oval dome visible from across the city. Inside, the venerated Byzantine icon of the Madonna is displayed above the high altar, framed by centuries of ex-voto offerings.
Step outside onto the esplanade and the view opens up dramatically: Bologna's terracotta rooftops, the Asinelli tower needle, and on exceptionally clear winter days, the distant glitter of the Adriatic. A small café near the top serves espresso and pastries — the perfect reward.
