Mercato di Mezzo
Tucked inside the medieval arcades of the Quadrilatero — Bologna's ancient market quarter — Mercato di Mezzo is a buzzing covered food hall where centuries of culinary tradition collide with the energy of a modern street-food scene. Vendors sell everything from paper cones of fried crescentine to slabs of aged Parmigiano-Reggiano cut to order.
The Quadrilatero: Bologna's edible heart
The Quadrilatero district surrounding the market has been Bologna's food hub since Roman times. Via Drapperie, Via Caprarie and Via Pescherie Vecchie are lined with specialist delis, butchers and cheese shops whose window displays alone are worth the trip — towers of mortadella, glistening culatello and wheels of Parmigiano stacked like golden drums.
Mercato di Mezzo itself occupies a handsome 19th-century building at the corner of Via degli Orefici. The ground floor hosts artisan food stalls; the upper level is a sit-down dining area with exposed beams and a lively atmosphere that fills fast at lunch.
What to eat and when to go
Must-tries include tigelle (small flatbreads split and stuffed with squacquerone cheese and rocket), a glass of Pignoletto frizzante from the Colli Bolognesi, and a cone of mortadella-stuffed crescentine from the deli counters spilling out onto the street.
The market is liveliest between 12:00 and 14:00 when locals flood in for lunch. Arrive just before noon to grab a stool at the counter, order a spritz and watch the organised chaos unfold around you.
