Zip World Llechwedd — Deep Mine Tour
Descend into the belly of a Victorian slate mountain on the UK's steepest narrow-gauge cable railway, then walk through cathedral-sized caverns lit by cutting-edge enhanced-reality storytelling. This is Blaenau's unmissable centrepiece — part industrial museum, part underground theatre.
Into the Mountain
Llechwedd has been active since 1836, and the Deep Mine Tour puts you squarely inside that history. Expert local guides — many with multi-generational family ties to the slate industry — lead you through tunnels and caverns, mixing humour and poignancy in equal measure.
The enhanced-reality technology used on the tour projects the miners' world around you in the darkness, making the hour underground feel more like a vivid time-slip than a museum visit. The temperature holds at a steady 54°F year-round, making it a brilliant wet-weather option too.
Beyond the Tour
The same site houses Bounce Below — a bouncy-net playground inside a cavern twice the size of St Paul's Cathedral — and Zip World Caverns, where zip lines, rope bridges and via ferrata routes thread through the underground rock. The 90-minute Quarry Explorer 4x4 tour climbs to man-made summits 1,400 feet above sea level, with panoramic Snowdonia views and abandoned wheel-houses still rusting in place.
On the surface, a slate workshop runs daily splitting demonstrations, and the on-site shop sells slate-cavern-aged cheddar cheese — a very good reason to linger after you re-emerge into daylight.
Getting There & Practicalities
Llechwedd sits just off the A470 on the northern edge of Blaenau Ffestiniog, with free parking on site. The Conwy Valley railway line and the Ffestiniog Railway both terminate at Blaenau Ffestiniog station, a short walk away, so a car is not essential.
Book the Deep Mine Tour in advance, especially in summer. Wear warm layers — it is genuinely cold underground — and sturdy footwear, as paths are uneven.
