Cellb — Community Cinema, Bar & Arts Centre

Housed in a converted Victorian police station and courthouse on Blaenau's high street, Cellb (Welsh for 'cell') is the town's fiercely independent arts centre — part cinema, part bar, part live music venue and part community hub. It brought the first cinema screen back to Blaenau since the 1950s and is the most characterful place in town to spend an evening.

What Cellb Is

The building itself is a talking point: the original Victorian cells, dock and courtroom have been repurposed into a performance space, auditorium and bar, with the architecture doing much of the atmospheric work. The cinema screens a mix of mainstream releases and art-house films, and the bar serves local ales and Welsh spirits at prices that will pleasantly surprise visitors used to city costs.

Cellb also functions as a youth training location and hosts live music, comedy nights and community events throughout the year, giving it a genuine neighbourhood-pub energy rather than the sanitised feel of a tourist attraction. If you want to meet actual Blaenau locals, this is where you come.

The Broader Town Streetscape

Blaenau's high street rewards a slow wander in its own right. Local sayings, quarrying terms and lines of Welsh poetry have been engraved directly into the pavement from one end of town to the other — a public art installation that doubles as a crash course in local culture and the Welsh language.

Outside the chip shop Trish & Chips, look down for one of poet Gwyn Thomas' most celebrated lines, describing Blaenau as 'a bracelet of a town on a bone of rock'. An interpretation booklet translating all the pavement inscriptions is available from shops in the town centre.

Planning Your Evening

Cellb is best experienced in the early evening: grab a drink at the bar, check the noticeboard for that week's film or live event, and settle in. Cinema tickets and drinks are notably good value — a full evening out for the price of a single round in a city-centre bar.

The Manod Hotel on the high street is a friendly local pub that also welcomes visitors warmly, and the two venues together make for a very convivial Blaenau evening. Check Cellb's events calendar online before you arrive to catch a live performance.
