Bullring Rag Market
Tucked behind the gleaming Selfridges building, the Bullring Rag Market is old-school Birmingham at its unfiltered best — a vast, buzzing indoor bazaar where 350 stalls spill over with fabrics, vintage clothing, haberdashery and everyday bargains. It has been trading here for generations, and the energy inside is unlike anything a shopping centre can replicate.
The Fabric of Birmingham
The Rag Market is one of three Bull Ring Markets and is renowned above all for its extraordinary range of fabrics — rolls of silk, cotton, lace and net curtain stretch as far as the eye can see. Dressmakers, costume designers and savvy home decorators have been sourcing material here for decades, and the prices remain genuinely hard to beat anywhere in the UK.
Beyond textiles, the 17 perimeter shops and hundreds of stalls stock everything from jewellery and accessories to household goods and street food. The adjacent Bullring Open Market handles fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood, so you can do an entire week's shop in one colourful sweep.
Bargain Hunting Like a Local
The market is open four days a week — Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday — and serious shoppers arrive early to secure the best picks before the crowds arrive. Saturday draws the widest variety of stalls and occasional special events, while Thursday is the quietest day if you prefer a more relaxed browse.
Cash is king here: most stalls are cash-only, so stop at an ATM before you head in. The Big Brum Antique Market also takes over the space around ten times a year, transforming it into a treasure hunt for vintage finds and collectables — check the website for upcoming dates.
