Rochusberg & St. Rochuskapelle

Climb the vine-draped Rochusberg hill on the western edge of Bingen and you are rewarded with one of the widest, most colour-saturated panoramas in the entire Rhineland — the Rhine, the Nahe Valley, the Rheingau and the rolling hills of Rheinhessen all spread out below you at once. The candy-pink neo-Gothic pilgrimage chapel at the summit makes the view even more surreal.

The Hill, the Chapel & the Vines

The Rochus Chapel (St. Rochuskapelle) crowns the Rochusberg summit and captivates visitors with its distinctive pink colour scheme, ornate facade and intricate stone carvings — a neo-Gothic gem that looks almost confected against the green hillside.

A beautiful circular walking path winds through the Rochusberg vineyards below the chapel, with interpretive boards connecting the landscape to the teachings of Hildegard von Bingen, the 12th-century polymath and Bingen's most famous daughter, who wrote extensively about the healing properties of local plants and vines.

The View That Stops You Cold

From the chapel terrace, the panorama stretches across Rheinhessen to the north, down the Nahe Valley to the west and sweeps east over the Rheingau — on a clear autumn morning, when the vine leaves turn from green to amber and red, it is genuinely breathtaking.

Goethe himself visited the Rochusberg in 1814 and was moved enough to write about it; the hill has drawn poets and painters ever since, making it one of the quiet pillars of Rhine Romanticism.

When to Go & How to Reach It

Autumn (late September to early November) is peak season for colour, but spring brings wildflowers and fresh green vines that are equally photogenic. The hill is accessible on foot from central Bingen in about 30–40 minutes, or by car — there is ample free parking at the chapel.

A small pilgrimage market takes place on the Rochusberg each August around St. Roch's Day (16 August), drawing locals for sausages, Riesling and folk music in a setting that feels entirely unchanged from a century ago.
