Bingen Winzerfest (Wine Festival)

Every September, Bingen transforms its Rhine-facing promenade into one of the Rhineland's most atmospheric wine festivals — eleven consecutive evenings of local Riesling, Spätburgunder and Müller-Thurgau poured straight from the region's own wineries, with fairy lights strung above the river and the Mäuseturm glowing in the distance.

A Festival Rooted in Wine Country

The Bingen Winzerfest is a genuine growers' festival, not a generic beer-tent affair. Bingen sits at the meeting point of three distinct wine regions — Rheinhessen, Nahe and Rheingau — and the festival showcases wines from all three, giving visitors an unparalleled side-by-side tasting opportunity that no wine shop can replicate.

Stalls are run by the wineries themselves, which means you can chat directly with the people who grew and pressed the grapes. Dry Nahe Rieslings, fuller-bodied Rheinhessen Silvaner and the elegant Rheingau Rieslings are all poured within a few metres of each other.

The Atmosphere After Dark

As dusk falls over the Rhine, the festival takes on a distinctly romantic quality: the river reflects the lights of passing barges, live bands play everything from folk to jazz on the main stage, and the warm Rhineland evenings stretch late into the night.

The grand finale of the festival season is the 'Rhine in Flames' (Rhein in Flammen) event — a spectacular summer night when the old buildings and castle ruins along the river are illuminated by fireworks and light displays visible for kilometres in both directions.

What to Eat & Drink

Beyond wine, look for Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart) — the traditional Rhineland partner to young, slightly sparkling Federweißer (new wine) — as well as grilled Bratwurst, local cheeses from the Nahe valley and Flammkuchen (Alsatian-style flatbread) from pop-up stalls along the promenade.

The Vinothek Bingen am Rhein, open year-round near the town centre, is a excellent fallback for a curated tasting of local specialities if you miss the festival window.
