Walls Walk & the Eastern Belvedere
Bevagna sits on a low rise at the edge of the Valle Umbra, and a stroll along the surviving stretch of medieval walls on the town's eastern flank rewards you with an open panorama across olive groves and the distant blue ridge of the Martani hills — with almost no other tourists in sight.
The Route
Start at Porta Foligno, the best-preserved of Bevagna's medieval gates, and follow the gravel path that hugs the outside of the walls heading south. The walk takes about 20 minutes at a gentle pace and ends near the public gardens (Giardini Pubblici) where a bench-lined belvedere looks directly west over the flat Umbrian plain.
The landscape below is a patchwork of tobacco fields, sunflowers (in July) and the dead-straight Roman road — the Via Flaminia — which you can pick out as a faint pale line cutting through the green. Binoculars are worth carrying.
Best Time to Go
Late afternoon in spring or early autumn is ideal: the light is soft, the air is cool and the Martani hills turn a deep violet as the sun drops behind them. In midsummer come after 6 pm to avoid the heat.
The path is unpaved but flat and easy; ordinary trainers are fine. There are no cafés along the route so bring water, especially in summer.
