Pont de Bergerac & Quai Salvette Panorama
Standing at the midpoint of Bergerac's stone road bridge at dawn or dusk, with the Dordogne stretching away in both directions and the old town's church towers reflected in the slow-moving water below, is the kind of view that makes you reach for your camera before you've even consciously registered why. It costs nothing and takes five minutes to walk to from the old town.
The View from the Bridge
The Pont de Bergerac spans the Dordogne just south of the old town and offers unobstructed upstream views toward the wooded hills of the Périgord Pourpre — green, rolling and almost absurdly picturesque. Downstream, the river bends gently past riverside gardens and the occasional gabarre barge, with weeping willows trailing in the current.
Early morning is best: river mist hangs over the water, the light is soft and pink, and you'll likely have the bridge almost to yourself. By 8 am the scene is already fully lit and locals are cycling across to the morning market.
Quai Salvette and the Riverside Walk
From the bridge, the walk north along Quai Salvette hugs the riverbank past restored merchants' warehouses and shaded benches, connecting to the old port and the gabarre moorings. This 600-metre stretch is flat, easy and lined with plane trees that create a dappled green tunnel in summer.
The old port area at the northern end has a small beach-like gravel bank where children paddle in summer and fishermen cast lines in the early morning. It's a completely unhurried, local scene that feels miles away from any tourist circuit.
