Le Repaire de Cyrano Restaurant

Tucked into a vaulted stone dining room just off Place de la Myrpe in the heart of the old town, Le Repaire de Cyrano has been serving serious, unfussy Périgord cuisine for decades — duck magret cooked precisely to a rosy pink, house-made foie gras terrine, and walnut cake with local honey that arrives warm and without apology. This is the real thing, not a tourist approximation of it.

What to Order

The magret de canard — the breast of a duck fattened for foie gras production — is the signature dish and arrives perfectly seared with a crisp, rendered fat cap, typically served with Sarladaise potatoes (cooked in duck fat with garlic) or cèpe mushrooms when in season. Pair it with a glass of Pécharmant, the most structured and age-worthy red wine appellation within the Bergerac region, produced from vineyards just northeast of the city.

Start with the foie gras terrine and a glass of Monbazillac — the local sweet wine produced from Sémillon grapes affected by noble rot, analogous to Sauternes but less famous and considerably more affordable. The classic pairing of cold foie gras and sweet Monbazillac is one of Périgord's great gastronomic pleasures.

The Setting and Atmosphere

The interior is all exposed stone, low beams and candlelight — the kind of room that makes even a Tuesday lunch feel like an occasion. In summer, tables spill onto the cobbled lane outside, shaded by the medieval buildings on either side.

Service is attentive without being fussy, and the lunch menu (plat du jour plus dessert) represents exceptional value for cooking of this quality. Book ahead for weekend dinners, particularly in July and August when the old town fills with visitors from across Europe.
