Mount Fløyen via the Fløibanen Funicular
Since 1918 the Fløibanen funicular has been whisking residents and visitors from Bergen's city centre to the summit of Mount Fløyen, 320 metres above sea level, in just six minutes. The panorama that greets you — city, fjord, islands and seven surrounding mountains — is the quintessential Bergen postcard.
The Ride and the View
The two historic carriages, named Rødhette and Blåmann, each carry up to 120 passengers and run from early morning until midnight every day of the year. As the funicular climbs, red-roofed houses, the harbour and the surrounding mountain ridges unfold below you in quick succession.
At the top, a large viewing platform delivers an unobstructed panorama over the city and the Byfjorden. On a clear day the view is razor-sharp; on a misty morning the clouds rolling over the rooftops carry their own undeniable Nordic charm.
Beyond the Viewpoint: Fløyen Mountain Park
Mount Fløyen is far more than a lookout — it is an extensive mountain park threaded with lakes, forests and walking trails, many of which are suitable for families with young children. The popular Vidden trail connects Fløyen all the way to Mount Ulriken for those who want a serious half-day hike.
At the summit you can eat at Fløirestauranten or grab a coffee at Fløistuen Café before heading into the trails. There is even a troll forest and a playground for children, and in summer a canoe rental at lake Skomakerdiket.
Tips for the Best Experience
Buy tickets in advance on floyen.no or via the Fløibanen app — queues can stretch over an hour in peak summer. The funicular operates year-round, but note that it closes for annual maintenance in early November each year.
If you prefer to earn the view, well-signposted walking trails lead up through Bergen's quiet hillside residential neighbourhoods; the descent on foot is equally rewarding.
