Lysøen Island & Ole Bull's Villa
A short ferry hop from the village of Søvik brings you to Lysøen, a tiny wooded island in the Bjørnafjorden where Norway's greatest 19th-century violinist built himself an extraordinary summer retreat. Barely visited compared to Bergen's headline sights, it rewards the curious with eccentric architecture, forest paths and total tranquillity.
Ole Bull and His 'Little Alhambra'
Ole Bull (1810–1880) was a world-famous violin virtuoso and composer born in Bergen, whose performances captivated audiences across Europe and America. In 1872–73 he built Villa Lysøen on this island to his own designs, supervised by architect Conrad Fredrik von der Lippe, blending towers, an onion dome, Gothic arches and exotic ornamentation into what he called his 'little Alhambra'.
The villa's interior centrepiece is a soaring concert hall where Bull entertained the leading artists and intellectuals of his day. The building has remained essentially unchanged since his death in 1880 — a time capsule of one of Norway's most colourful cultural figures.
The Island Itself
Beyond the villa, Lysøen is a nature experience in its own right: kilometres of woodland pathways wind through the island, leading to picnic spots, a quay for swimming and a lookout tower built in 1903 by Bull's American descendants at the island's highest point, 76 metres above sea level.
The island is only accessible by boat — a small passenger ferry crosses from Søvik, less than one kilometre to the east. The crossing takes just a few minutes and is itself a gentle introduction to the fjord landscape surrounding Bergen.
Planning Your Visit
The Ole Bull Museum at Lysøen is currently closed for extensive renovations (from 2025), but the island itself remains open to visitors at all times and can be reached by the regular ferry from Søvik or by private boat. Check kodebergen.no for the latest reopening date before you travel.
To reach Søvik from Bergen, take bus towards Fana and follow signs for the Lysøen ferry. Allow at least half a day to explore the trails properly.
