Mercato delle Valli, Bergamo
Tucked inside a 1930s rationalist building in Città Bassa, the Mercato delle Valli is where Bergamo's cooks actually shop — stalls overflow with Taleggio wheels, polenta farina, bresaola from Valtellina and wild mushrooms gathered that same morning in the Orobie valleys.
What to Buy and Taste
Head straight for the cheese counters along the north wall, where you will find Strachitunt (a raw-milk blue from the Val Taleggio, DOP since 2014) alongside aged Branzi and creamy Formai de Mut — all produced within 40 kilometres of where you are standing.
The deli stalls sell casoncelli bergamaschi, the local stuffed pasta filled with sausage, amaretti and raisins; buy them fresh and vacuum-packed to take home, or ask which restaurants nearby will cook them to order for lunch.
Market Rhythm and Surroundings
The market is liveliest on Tuesday and Saturday mornings when outdoor stalls spill onto the surrounding streets, turning the blocks around Via Quarenghi into an impromptu street food scene of roasted chestnuts, fried dough and espresso carts.
The surrounding Borgo Santa Caterina neighbourhood is itself worth a slow wander: it retains the working-class Bergamasque character that the tourist-polished Città Alta has partly lost, with family trattorie, hardware shops and old men playing cards outside the bar.
