Colle di San Vigilio
A second, lesser-known funicular whisks you above Città Alta to the pine-shaded summit of San Vigilio, where a small castle, a garden restaurant and the widest view in the province await. Most tourists never make it up here — their loss, your gain.
The Ride and the View
The San Vigilio funicular departs from Porta Sant'Alessandro inside Città Alta and climbs steeply through terraced gardens to the 520-metre summit in just three minutes. The top station opens onto a terrace that frames Città Alta's rooftops, the lower city grid and, beyond it, the flat silver shimmer of the Po plain stretching to Milan.
At sunset the light turns the sandstone walls amber and the distant Alps go violet — it is the single best photograph you can take in Bergamo.
The Castle and the Trails
The ruined Castello di San Vigilio (free entry, always open) sits just above the funicular station; wander its overgrown battlements for an even higher vantage point and a sense of total solitude rare this close to a city.
From the castle, waymarked trails drop through chestnut and oak woodland into the Valle Brembana foothills — a pleasant 45-minute loop brings you back to Città Alta via the old mule path, Viale delle Mura.
