Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Queralt
Perched at 1,200 metres on the rocky ridge of the Serra de Queralt, this 18th-century Baroque sanctuary is Berga's most iconic silhouette — and the panoramic reward at the top is every bit as spiritual as the building itself. On a clear morning the pre-Pyrenean ridges stack up to the horizon in every direction.
Getting Up There
A narrow road winds up from Berga to the sanctuary, and a cable car (telefèric) also makes the ascent — a fun option for families or anyone who wants to save their legs for the walking trails that fan out along the ridge once you arrive. The drive at dusk, recommended by local guides, rewards you with the whole Berguedà basin turning gold below.
The sanctuary sits at the highest reachable point of the Queralt massif, giving unobstructed 180-degree views over Berga's rooftops, the Llobregat valley and, on the clearest winter days, the distant snowy peaks of the Pyrenees proper.
Inside the Sanctuary
The church interior follows an 18th-century Baroque plan with three naves. Its most venerated object is a medieval image of the Virgin of Queralt, patron of Berga and the entire Berguedà comarca — locals make a pilgrimage here every year and the chapel radiates a quiet, centuries-old devotion that is moving even for secular visitors.
The original Baroque altar was destroyed in 1936 and the whole structure underwent intense post-war restoration, giving the interior a layered quality where different eras of faith sit side by side. A small café near the sanctuary car park sells coffee and local pastries.
Trails and Sunset Walks
From the sanctuary esplanade, several marked trails trace the limestone crests of the Queralt range. The short loop to the Creu de Queralt cross takes about 45 minutes and delivers vertiginous cliff-edge views straight down to Berga's old town — one of the great free viewpoints in Catalonia.
Sunset from Queralt is a local ritual: the town below fills with amber light, the church bell tolls, and the Berguedà valley fades into purple shadow. Bring a layer — at 1,200 metres the temperature drops sharply once the sun dips behind the ridge.
