Mercado Agroalimentario de Benasque
Every Saturday morning from late June through September, the main square of Benasque fills with producers from across the Ribagorza comarca selling cheeses, cured meats, honey and foraged goods that you simply cannot find in a supermarket. It is small, genuine and completely unspectacular in the best possible way.
What to Look For
The local cheese stalls are the highlight: look for queso de Benasque, a semi-cured cow's milk cheese with a slightly grassy, buttery flavour that reflects the high-altitude pastures where the animals graze all summer.
Pyrenean honey — particularly the dark, intensely floral variety made from mountain wildflowers — is sold by beekeepers who can tell you exactly which valley their hives are in.
Beyond the Food
A couple of stalls sell handmade Pyrenean crafts: carved wooden utensils, hand-forged cowbells and woven baskets that make genuinely useful souvenirs rather than tourist tat.
The market doubles as a social event for valley residents, so arrive early (by 9:30), order a coffee from the adjacent bar, and watch the village wake up around you.
