Stupa of Enlightenment (Stupa de la Iluminación)
Standing 33 metres tall on a hilltop above Benalmádena Pueblo, the Stupa of Enlightenment is the largest Buddhist stupa in Europe and one of the most genuinely unexpected sights anywhere on the Spanish coast — a serene, gold-crowned monument that feels like it has been airlifted from the Himalayas.
An Unlikely Landmark
Consecrated in 2003 by the Kagyu Samye Dzong Buddhist community, the stupa was built to promote peace and harmony and is still an active place of meditation and pilgrimage — the atmosphere of quiet contemplation is palpable the moment you step through the gate.
The hilltop location amplifies the drama: the gleaming white tower rises against an open sky, and the panoramic views of the Costa del Sol and the surrounding mountains are breathtaking, with the African coastline visible on the clearest days.
Inside and Around the Stupa
The interior houses sacred relics, thangka paintings and offerings from Buddhist teachers around the world — visitors of all faiths are welcome and a small donation is customary rather than a fixed entry fee.
Directly across the road from the stupa is the Mariposario de Benalmádena, Europe's largest butterfly house, where over 1,500 tropical butterflies fly freely around visitors among waterfalls and exotic plants — the combination of the two makes for an extraordinary half-day.
Getting the Most from Your Visit
The stupa is a ten-minute walk from Castillo de Colomares, making a natural loop of Benalmádena Pueblo's most unusual sights — start at the castle, walk up to the stupa and finish with a coffee in Plaza de España.
Visit on a weekday morning for the quietest experience; weekends draw more visitors, though the site rarely feels crowded compared to the coastal attractions below.
