Orrido di Bellano
A thundering torrent has spent millennia slicing a cathedral-like slot canyon right through the heart of town, and you can walk the entire length of it on suspended metal walkways. Few geological spectacles on Lake Como are this dramatic, this accessible, or this free of crowds.
Into the canyon
The Orrido is a narrow gorge carved by the Pioverna river, its walls rising up to 30 metres of smooth, water-polished gneiss streaked with mineral veins. Iron walkways and bridges cling to the rock face, carrying you above churning green pools and through a constant cool mist that feels miraculous on a hot July afternoon.
The path is short — barely 200 metres end to end — but the sensory overload stretches every second. Look up and you'll see a ribbon of sky framed by rock; look down and the water is a luminous jade green where it slows into pools.
Practical visit tips
The entrance is right in the centre of Bellano, signed from the lakefront promenade — you can't miss the sound of the river before you see the gate. Opening hours are seasonal, typically April to October, with an admission fee of around €4–5 for adults.
Visit on a weekday morning in late spring for the best light and thinnest crowds. After heavy rain the flow is spectacular but the mist can soak you; bring a light waterproof or accept that you will get happily drenched.
