Bellano Weekly Market

Every Thursday morning the lakefront promenade and the streets around Piazza San Giorgio fill with stalls selling everything from Lariana cheeses and cured meats to housewares and seasonal produce, giving you a genuine slice of small-town Lombard life that the big-name lake resorts have largely lost.

What to buy and taste

The food stalls are the main event: look for local producers selling missoltini (sun-dried agone fish, a Como speciality), fresh-pressed olive oil from the lake's western shore, and the nutty aged cheeses of the Valsassina valley just behind Bellano. A few stalls sell home-made pasta and filled focaccia that make a perfect impromptu lakeside lunch.

Seasonal fruit and vegetables from the Lecco plain arrive in abundance — in summer expect figs, peaches and courgette flowers; in autumn, porcini mushrooms and chestnuts from the surrounding hills.

Navigating the market

The market runs from around 08:00 to 13:00 and is busiest between 09:00 and 11:00 when local residents do their weekly shop. Parking is tight on market day; arrive by ferry from Varenna or Colico to avoid the hassle entirely.

Prices are straightforwardly local — no tourist markup — and most vendors are happy to let you taste before you buy. Bring cash and a reusable bag; plastic bags are scarce and frowned upon.
