Church of Santi Nazaro e Celso
Bellano's main parish church rises above the lakefront with a distinctive striped Lombard-Gothic facade of black serpentine and white marble, a pattern so bold it stops ferry passengers mid-conversation. Inside, the space opens into a surprisingly grand Baroque interior that punches well above the weight of a small lake town.
The facade and its story
The alternating bands of dark and light stone are a signature of 14th-century Lombard religious architecture, the same visual language used at the Duomo in Monza and the Certosa di Pavia. Here the effect is intimate rather than monumental, framed by the narrow streets of the old town and the glittering lake behind you.
The church was founded in the early medieval period and substantially rebuilt in the 1300s; the campanile beside it is even older, its Romanesque stonework visibly different from the Gothic striping of the main facade.
Inside the church
The interior holds several notable canvases from the Lombard school, including works attributed to followers of Gaudenzio Ferrari. The side chapels are richly decorated with stucco and gilt, a reminder that Bellano was once a prosperous silk-weaving town with patrons wealthy enough to fund serious art.
Mass is still celebrated here regularly, so visit respectfully outside service times. The church is usually unlocked during morning and late-afternoon hours and entry is free.
