Marché de Beaulieu-sur-Mer
Every morning except Monday, the compact but lively covered and open-air market on Place du Général de Gaulle fills with the scents of lavender soap, fresh-cut herbs and ripe Provençal tomatoes. It is the social heart of the town, where fishermen from Villefranche sell the morning's catch alongside farmers trucking in produce from the Var hinterland.
What to Buy
Look for socca (chickpea-flour pancake) sold hot from a copper pan at the street-food stall on the square's eastern corner — it is the quintessential Nice-hinterland snack and costs only a couple of euros. Alongside it you will find tapenade, fresh chèvre rolled in herbs, and the fat green olives of the Alpes-Maritimes.
The flower sellers occupy the shadiest corner and stock the same blooms — mimosa in February, sunflowers in July, dried lavender year-round — that have made Riviera markets famous since the 19th century.
Timing Your Visit
Arrive between 08:00 and 09:30 for the best selection and the most animated atmosphere, when locals are doing their genuine weekly shop rather than browsing for souvenirs.
By 12:30 the stallholders are packing up; combine your market visit with breakfast at one of the café terraces on the square, where a café crème and a croissant cost a fraction of what you would pay in Monaco twenty minutes along the coast.
