Oskar – Das Wirtshaus am Markt
Sitting on Bayreuth's lively market square inside one of the oldest buildings in town, Oskar is the kind of place where a quick lunch stretches into a long, golden afternoon. Franconian bratwurst, roast pork, local trout and a cold regional beer — this is the real deal, not a tourist trap.
History on Your Plate
The building at Maximilianstraße 33 has been standing for at least 600 years, serving stints as city hall and police station before the Wenk and Bauernfeind families transformed it into a restaurant in 1999. The bones of the place — thick walls, low beams, stone floors — do all the atmospheric heavy lifting.
The menu is rooted in Franconian tradition: grilled beef, roast pork and locally caught trout cooked to perfection, with generous portions that reflect the region's no-nonsense approach to hospitality.
The Terrace & the Square
On warm evenings the streetside terrace buzzes with diners overlooking the market square — order a Franconian Kellerbier, watch the city go by and you will understand immediately why Bayreuth locals are fiercely proud of their food culture.
The bar inside blends modern speakeasy energy with rustic historic charm, making Oskar equally good for a long dinner or a spontaneous late-night drink after an opera.
The Bayreuth Bratwurst Rule
While you are in Bayreuth, you must try the local bratwurst at least once: by tradition it is finger-thick, about 20 centimetres long, low in salt and always served in pairs with mustard — never ketchup, never alone.
Upper Franconia per capita has more breweries, bakeries and butchers than virtually anywhere else in the world, so every ingredient on Oskar's menu has an almost embarrassingly short journey from farm to table.
