Tonle Sap Lake Floating Villages
The Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and the beating ecological heart of Cambodia — and a boat trip out to its floating villages is one of the most genuinely transporting experiences available anywhere near Siem Reap. Entire communities live, fish, and go to school on the water, their stilted and floating homes shifting with the lake's dramatic seasonal rhythms.
The Lake & Its Villages
The Tonle Sap is a massive lake home to several floating villages and a stunning array of wildlife, and it swells to roughly five times its dry-season size when the Mekong reverses its flow each monsoon — one of the great natural phenomena of Southeast Asia. The villages of Kampong Phluk and Chong Kneas are the most accessible from Siem Reap, while Kampong Khleang is considered the most authentic, though water levels and timing matter for reaching it comfortably.
On a boat tour you'll drift past floating schools, fish-processing platforms, crocodile farms, and family homes with satellite dishes and vegetable gardens balanced on pontoons. The scale and ingenuity of life on the water is humbling, and the birdlife in the flooded forest around Kampong Phluk — herons, cormorants, painted storks — is exceptional in the dry season when the forest canopy is above the waterline.
When to Go & How to Do It Responsibly
The dry season (November to May) is generally best for visiting Kampong Phluk, when you can glide through the flooded forest in a small wooden boat and the stilted houses tower 6–8 metres above you on their extraordinary legs. In the wet season (June–October), the lake is fuller and more dramatic but the flooded forest is submerged.
Choose a tour operator that pays fair prices to local boat owners and avoids pressuring visitors to buy overpriced goods from floating shops — a practice that has attracted criticism in some villages. A private guide who speaks the local language and can introduce you to residents makes the experience far richer than a generic group tour.
