Phsar Leu Thom Thmey (Upper Market)
If Phsar Chas (the Old Market) is Siem Reap for tourists, Phsar Leu Thom Thmey is Siem Reap for everyone else. This sprawling indoor-outdoor market on National Road 6 is the city's largest and most authentic, a sensory overload of tropical produce, freshly made snacks, bolts of cloth, and the unhurried rhythms of daily Cambodian life.
What You'll Find
The market is a one-stop shop for locals: fresh dragon fruit, mangosteen, and rambutan piled high at the produce stalls; traditional Khmer sampots (wraparound skirts) folded in towers of colour; clay pots and coconut graters in the kitchenware lanes; and an outdoor courtyard of food stalls serving freshly made Cambodian desserts like num ansom (sticky rice cakes) and palm sugar candies at prices that will make your jaw drop.
Few tourists make it this far, which means vendors are going about their real business — not performing it for cameras. If you spot other foreigners, chances are they are expats or on a food tour with a local chef. This is the market to visit if you want to understand how Siem Reap actually eats and shops.
How to Make the Most of It
Visit early — ideally before 8 am — when the produce is freshest and the action is at its peak. The covered interior can feel warm and close by mid-morning, and the aromatic mix of spices, raw meat, and tropical fruit is at its most vivid (and pungent) in the first hours of trading.
Almost no English is spoken here, so learning a few basic Khmer phrases goes a long way. A friendly 'soksabai' (hello) and a smile open more doors than any translation app. Come prepared to navigate narrow aisles and embrace the organised chaos.
