Jardim Botânico Municipal de Bauru
Most visitors rush past this extraordinary place, but Bauru's Municipal Botanical Garden protects 321 hectares of native cerrado — one of the world's most biodiverse and threatened savannahs — right on the city's edge. A hilltop mirante trail, living orchid and bromeliad collections, and beehives along the path make it a genuine off-the-beaten-track find.
Cerrado Preserved in the City
The Jardim Botânico Municipal de Bauru (JBMB) is a scientific conservation institution, not merely a decorative garden, which means its 321 hectares of cerrado vegetation are managed with rigorous ecological intent. In 2018 its reserve was formally incorporated into the state-level 'Refúgio da Vida Silvestre Aimorés' protected area, cementing its conservation status.
Living collections of orchids, bromeliads, ferns, aquatic plants, medicinal herbs, bamboos, palms and native trees are maintained across the grounds, giving botanically curious visitors a structured tour through the extraordinary plant diversity of central Brazil's savannah biome.
The Mirante Trail & What You'll See
A 200-metre Trilha do Mirante footpath climbs through native cerrado to a hilltop viewpoint where the full scale of the preserved forest canopy stretches out in every direction — one of the most quietly dramatic panoramas in the entire city. The trail is easy and well-marked, taking around 20 minutes at a relaxed pace.
Along the ecological trail you will spot active beehive displays and, if you are lucky, a burst of cerrado birdlife. The visitor centre at the entrance provides context on the flora and the conservation programme, and guided visits can be arranged for school groups and interested travellers alike.
