Río Vero Gorge Walk from Barbastro
Most visitors drive straight past Barbastro heading for Alquézar, not realising that the lower Río Vero gorge is accessible on foot directly from the city's northern edge. A 4-kilometre trail follows the river through sculpted limestone narrows, past Iberian rock-art sites and into the first cool shadows of the Sierra de Guara — and you can be back in time for lunch.
Into the Gorge
The trail begins at the Parque Fluvial del Vero, a riverside park just north of the N-123 road, where the river has carved a miniature canyon of cream and ochre limestone. In spring the water runs turquoise with snowmelt and the banks are thick with oleander and wild fig.
About 2 kilometres in, a small interpretive panel marks the location of Cueva del Regacéns, one of several sites in the Vero valley containing Neolithic and Bronze Age rock paintings — the entire valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for prehistoric rock art. The paintings are faint but unmistakably human: stick figures, deer and handprints left by people who sheltered in these cliffs 6,000 years ago.
Practical Magic
The path is well-marked with yellow and white GR blazes and is suitable for anyone reasonably fit; the only technical section is a short scramble over river boulders at the first narrows, which can be bypassed on a higher path in wet conditions.
Return the same way or, if you've arranged a second car, continue 12 kilometres upstream to Alquézar — one of Aragon's most beautiful villages — for a long lunch before driving back. The full gorge walk to Alquézar takes around 4–5 hours.
