Parque Fluvial del Río Elorz
Threading quietly along Barañáin's southern edge, the Río Elorz has been shaped into a green linear park that almost nobody outside the neighbourhood knows about — a shaded riverside path where herons stand motionless in the shallows, poplars arch overhead and the noise of the city dissolves within minutes of stepping onto the trail. It is completely free and completely lovely.
The River & Its Wildlife
The Elorz is a small Navarrese tributary of the Arga, and its riparian corridor supports a surprising amount of wildlife given its peri-urban setting: grey herons, little egrets, kingfishers and, in summer, sand martins nesting in the cut banks are all regularly spotted.
The riverbanks are thick with white poplar, willow and Lombardy poplar, creating a leafy green tunnel in summer that keeps walkers cool even in July heat. In autumn the same trees turn the path into a corridor of gold and copper.
The Walking & Cycling Route
A well-maintained gravel-and-tarmac path follows the Elorz for several kilometres, connecting Barañáin southward toward Galar and northward toward the Pamplona ring road where it links up with the city's wider network of carril bici (cycle lanes).
The flat terrain makes it suitable for all fitness levels, and the 4 km stretch between Barañáin and the Galar bridge and back is a perfect 1.5-hour evening walk requiring no special equipment.
Practical Access
The easiest entry point is from the southern end of Calle del Río in Barañáin, where a small signed path drops down to the riverbank beside a stone footbridge.
There are no facilities along the route, so bring water. Sunrise and the two hours before sunset offer the best wildlife-spotting odds and the most photogenic light on the water.
